MRI Scan: Knee (2018)

What is an MRI?

The initials MRI stand for magnetic resonance imaging. It's not an x-ray, but an MRI does provide doctors detailed images of parts of the body. MRI machines use pulses of radio frequency and a magnetic field to create a detailed image of a part of the body. MRI units can be tube-like, so patients should talk to their doctor if they are concerned about being in a closed-in space.

Why have an MRI of the Knee?

A knee MRI can help a doctor see the structures of the knee or learn if there is an infection, swelling or knee injury. Doctors can save MRI images, so they can compare how a knee looks before and after treatment or knee surgery.
