Non-maternity ultrasound (2018)

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound uses sound waves to produce an image of the inside of a body. It is commonly used to measure the development of the unborn baby in pregnant women (see Ultrasound - Pregnancy). A non-maternity ultrasound is imaging any part of the abdomen in men or women who are not pregnant. It lets doctors see if any of the organs are swollen or if there is something blocking the valves leading to an organ. It can help the doctor figure out why the patient is having abdominal (stomach or belly) pain.
