ABOUT THE DATA

Using 2006 hospital discharges, VHI reports a number of facts about doctors and hospitals where babies are born. How many babies are born there? How often did women have a cesarean for the first time? How often do women have repeat cesarean? How long do new moms stay in the hospital? And what’s the average hospital charge?

There is also information on doctors, such as where their offices are, where they were educated and what languages they speak. It includes information on whether they are Board Certified. Board certified physicians undergo additional testing and evaluation in one or more specialties or subspecialties. VHI downloads this information four times a year from the Virginia Board of Medicine’s web site. Doctors are required to keep this information up to date.

Virginia hospitals were given a detailed survey about their obstetric services and offerings. This guide reports on prenatal care, types of delivery rooms and post-partum care. Post-partum means after the baby is born. The report lists the number of neonatologists (doctors with extra training in treating newborn babies) and high-risk patient beds. It even lists which hospitals have Internet access and equipment like birthing balls. Click a hospital’s profile to learn more.
