The Impact of Timely Data

Through the Public Health Reporting Pathway (PHRP), VHI supports the secure exchange of vital newborn screening test results, enabling newborns to receive the care they need as quickly as possible.

The Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) operates seven days a week, including holidays, to perform these screenings, making sure no time is lost when a baby’s health is on the line. Each year, Virginia’s Newborn Screening Program follows up on more than 20,000 abnormal results to connect families with specialty care and ensure every child receives the attention and treatment they need to thrive.

In February 2025 alone, DCLS screened 7,334 newborns for 33 metabolic and hereditary disorders. Of those, 223 infants were identified with a critical disorder or carrier status and were able to receive early treatment, preventing potentially life-altering outcomes.
