Introducing Virginia’s Emergency Department Severity Dashboard
Virginia has launched its first Emergency Department (ED) Severity Dashboard, a new tool designed to increase transparency and understanding of emergency care statewide. This dashboard provides essential data on ED visits, categorized by the severity of each encounter.
Improved Clarity on Emergency Department Visits
In 2023, Virginia recorded over 3.7 million visits across 82 traditional EDs and 26 freestanding facilities. In this dashboard, each visit is classified by severity level: from 1 (lowest severity) to 5 (highest severity) based on CPT code.
This publication is guided by Virginia Code (§32.1-137.09,) requiring quarterly ED reporting from hospitals. VHI collects, analyzes and publishes these findings to support the Virginia Department of Health in upholding this requirement and understanding how emergency services are distributed across the Commonwealth.
