Strengthening Virginia’s Maternal and Infant Care Through Data

January 13, 2026

Since 2017, VHI’s Emergency Department Care Coordination (EDCC) program has provided integral, real-time data-sharing functionality to care facilities across Virginia, transforming care coordination via timely, customizable alerts.

Utilizing the EDCC to Enhance Maternal and Infant Care

Building on its existing robust framework, the EDCC program introduces new targeted functionality that directly supports maternal and infant health.

Providers utilizing the EDCC platform are now able to set up alerts for patients who present in hospital settings with a recent history of delivery. In ambulatory settings, the EDCC’s cohort and notification functionalities help care coordinators to effectively track and manage maternal quality measures, so mothers and infants receive continuous and comprehensive care. The program also provides visibility into mothers’ and infants’ care team members, facilitating better communication among providers.

In addition to these efforts, a specific Substance Exposed Infant (SEI) flag is now enabled to identify at-risk infants, ensuring they promptly receive necessary support and intervention.

Opportunities for Greater Postpartum Care

VHI is committed to expanding its network and offerings within the EDCC program to improve care for mothers and infants across Virginia via innovative data-sharing and care coordination solutions. VHI continues to seek partnerships offering opportunities to enhance the EDCC program’s capabilities related to maternal healthcare, including support for mothers during the critical postpartum period.
